چکیده

Acoustic radiation force imaging (ARFI) has been suggested as a tool for remote palpation. In this study an MR-ARFI sequence, based on echo-planar-imaging, is introduced, for remote semi-quantitative assessment of local tissue stiffness. The focal zone of a high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is positioned at the region of interest and a single HIFU burst is transmitted. The method then measures the entire time integral of the resulting displacement at the focal zone. Combining this measurement with the Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic tissue model, a local stiffness index is obtained. The method was implemented on gel phantoms, ex-vivo bovine brain and chicken liver specimens. The results have demonstrated the ability to evaluate the relative local stiffness within 600 ms and to distinguish between different tissues on the basis of their stiffness index. The method may potentially be used for remote palpation of suspicious regions for diagnostic purposes, or for providing a mechanical feedback during therapeutic procedures, such as thermal ablation. Magnetic resonance acoustic radiation force (impulse) imaging (MR-ARFI)

Background/introduction MR-ARFI adds to the rich toolbox of MR imaging methods for guiding focused ultrasound. MRI has exquisite soft tissue contrast for targeting focused ultrasound and a variety of contrast mechanisms for assessing the effect of focused ultrasound. In addition, MR can provide temperature mapping in near-realtime. MR-ARFI is an imaging method that compliments these other capab...

Rapid MR-ARFI method for focal spot localization during focused ultrasound therapy.

MR-guided focused ultrasound (FUS) is a noninvasive therapy for treating various pathologies. MR-based acoustic radiation force imaging (MR-ARFI) measures tissue displacement in the focal spot due to acoustic radiation force. MR-ARFI also provides feedback for adaptive focusing algorithms that could correct for phase aberrations caused by the skull during brain treatments. This work developed a...

Real-Time Monitoring Of Regional Tissue Elasticity During FUS Focused Ultrasound Therapy Using Harmonic Motion Imaging

The feasibility of the Harmonic Motion Imaging (HMI) technique for simultaneous monitoring and generation of focused ultrasound therapy using two separate focused ultrasound transducer elements has previously been shown. In this study, a new HMI technique is described that images tissue displacement induced by a harmonic radiation force induced using a single focused ultrasound element. First, ...

Confocal acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography using a ring ultrasonic transducer.

We designed and developed a confocal acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography system. A ring ultrasound transducer was used to achieve reflection mode excitation and generate an oscillating acoustic radiation force in order to generate displacements within the tissue, which were detected using the phase-resolved optical coherence elastography method. Both phantom and human tissue...

Integration of Acoustic Radiation Force and Optical Imaging for Blood Plasma Clot Stiffness Measurement

Despite the life-preserving function blood clotting serves in the body, inadequate or excessive blood clot stiffness has been associated with life-threatening diseases such as stroke, hemorrhage, and heart attack. The relationship between blood clot stiffness and vascular diseases underscores the importance of quantifying the magnitude and kinetics of blood's transformation from a fluid to a vi...
